Lomdei Daf Hayomi greeted this past Monday with joy and enthusiasm upon being mesayem Maseches Nedarim! Following 90 days of non-stop commitment to learning the daily daf, mesaymim from around the continent celebrated this accomplishment with a grand nationwide siyum. The Miami Beach Kollel where the siyum took place was filled with excited participants, while hundreds more joined from remote locations all over the country and beyond via live broadcast; all this was in addition to those who called in to the live phone telecast in order to take part in the siyum.

This siyum Masechta was hosted graciously by the daf yomi shiurim of South Florida, who are themselves wholly committed to limud Torah and specifically to limud Daf Yomi as is evident from the multiple shiurei daf yomi which take place daily in these communities. All siyum participants thoroughly enjoyed the program and sensed the feeling of true revitalization and chizuk. The program included divrei hakdama, Hadran and divrei pesicha from Rabbi Berish Braun and Rabbi Yaakov Gross, Roshei Kollel and Rabbi Yisroel Moshe Jenowski noted Magid Shiur and Rav of Khal Zichron Naftali. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the program was the address of Rabbi David, Rav, Khal Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, Brooklyn NY, who flew down to Florida especially for the occasion.

Rabbi David raised the question of why Rav Pappa, merited ten sons who were all great Talmidei Chachomim and why they are mentioned in the Hadran following every masechta? The answer, he responded, may lie in the greatness that he ascribed to Torah. There is a story about Rav Pappa that he once had a question which dealt with a halacha that was no longer applicable in his days, nonetheless, he eagerly sought an answer, so he went to ask his Rebbi. The Rebbi’s son who was present, recalled a clear braisa which clarified the Halacha. Upon hearing the answer, Rav Pappa got so excited that he kissed the boy and offered him his daughter in marriage. Rav Pappa clearly valued Torah very highly and went to great lengths to learn it properly. That must be why he merited so many sons who were great Talmidei Chachomim.

Rabbi David then highlighted a Mishna in Avos which states that the reward for a mitzvah is another mitzvah. When one invests effort into a mitzvah and performs it joyfully, the reward will be another mitzvah; the efforts we put in to something determine what we will get out of it.

Rabbi Eliyahu Simcha Bamberger, who attended the Siyum on behalf of the Agudas Yisroel of America national office said the resounding message of Rabbi David’s words was that we, the lomdei Torah and shomrei Mitzvos and our families, must realize what a treasure we have and accordingly attribute proper importance even to our seemingly minor accomplishments and achievements in Torah; this way, our reward will reflect what we value- namely – Torah.

“What better time is there than now, Chodesh Elul, to take this message to heart! For the next 65 days, join the lomdei daf hayomi in learning Maseches Nazir so you too will join the mesaymim at the next siyum Masechta”.
