The Ohio Department of Education released its new list of EdChoice designated schools this week. New to the list this year are several schools that serve the area in Cleveland where many in the Jewish community live. Many new students will now be eligible to receive an EdChoice voucher to attend a school of their choice. Schools in areas of Columbus and Cincinnati, where a large portion of the Jewish community live, remain on the list. This important designation will allow students to receive a tuition voucher (up to $4250 for elementary school and $5000 for high school) to attend a school of their choice. Students living in such an area and assigned to a low-performing public school, including those who have not yet attended a nonpublic school in Ohio, such as students entering Kindergarten or new to the state, are eligible. This will empower parents and students, and research has shown that this will have an important and positive impact on schools and districts. In addition, because of the “safe harbor” provision added recently in House Bill 487, there are no “report card grades” for public schools this year in Ohio, so this list will apply for two years (to view the list click here).

Special thanks to Governor Kasich, the Ohio General Assembly, and the Ohio Department of Education for their commitment to providing an array of high quality options for all students.
